Warriors vs. Warriors
North Union to host Alta-Aurelia
ARMSTRONG — It’s Warrior Week in Armstrong this Friday, as the North Union Warriors host the Alta-Aurelia Warriors in the 2020 regular season finale.
Both teams will be looking for momentum heading into the playoffs, as all teams qualify for the postseason this year.
North Union (1-5) is coming off a 61-12 loss to West Hancock, which moved up to fifth in the Class A rankings this week.
Last week, junior Aidan Fries took over quarterback duties as regular starter Carter Morphew works his way back. North Union coach Matt Ernster said Fries will start again this week.
“We expect to have Carter back next week for the playoffs,” Ernster said.
West Hancock held North Union running back Ryan Lang to just 11 rushing yards last week.
“They dominated the line of scrimmage,” Ernster said of the Eagles. “They were able to get penetration and disrupt blocking schemes all night. We will need to get off the ball better and identify fronts more effectively this week.”
Fries is currently 8-of-15 passing for 136 yards with one interception and two touchdowns.
Lang enters Friday’s game against Alta-Aurelia with 968 rushing yards on 139 carries with 14 touchdowns.
Alta-Aurelia (3-3 overall) is coming off a 43-22 victory over St. Edmond, in which the Warriors rushed for 393 yards while their defense held the Gaels to 95 yards.
“They are another physical team,” Ernster said of Alta-Aurelia. “They have a multitude of guys on offense that can make plays. We will have to very sound in assignments and tackle well. Defensively, they will be hard to run against. They have good linebackers and a good defensive tackle. We will need to be balanced so that they can’t stack the box. This will allow the running game to get going.”
Sleezer leads Alta-Aurelia’s defense with 40.5 tackles and Ryan Jensen has 34.
Christian Bierstedt continues to lead North Union with 48 tackles. Bryar Prochniak has 40.5 tackles.
