No. 2 St. Mary’s will challenge Titans
RUTHVEN — Having played St. Mary’s of Remsen three weeks ago, Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire will know what to expect as the two teams meet in the first round of the 8-Player playoffs on Friday.
The Hawks won that first matchup 45-0 while rushing for 355 yards and passing for 161.
“St. Mary’s has a lot of offensive weapons,” said GT/RA coach Todd Hough. “They spread you out to run and pass.”
For the season, St. Mary’s has 1,418 rushing yards and 996 through the air.
Quarterback jaxon Bunkers is 46-of-65 passing for 698 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Top receivers are Damen Bronmiller, 21 catches for 356 yards, and Austin Jensen, 19 catches for 262 yards. Seven other plays have caught at least one pass.
Jeremy Koenck leads the Hawks ground attack with 85 carries for 532 yards. Bunkers is second with 64 carries for 253 yards.
St. Mary’s wrapped up the regular season last week with a 48-13 win over Kingsley-Pierson.
The Hawks’ closest contest was a 30-28 win over then seventh-ranked Newell-Fonda on Oct. 2.
In the first meeting with GT/RA, St. Mary’s defense limited the Titans to just 91 total yards of offense–21 rushing and 70 passing.
“St. Mary’s defense is very good,” said Hough. “They are very disciplined and have excellent team speed.”
GT/RA, which dropped down from Class A to 8-Man Football, has had a time making the adjustments.
“Our biggest area of improvement is learning our assignments, we still have a ways to go but we have came a long way,” said Hough. “Our focus (this week) will be executing and doing the little things right.”
GT/RA has been without its regular starting quarterback Max Hough the last two games.
Coach Hough said whether he plays still may be a game-time decision.
Sophomore Drew Schnell has started the last two games under center and is 17-o-35 passing for 150 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.
Cormick Currans is the leading rusher for the Titans with 109 carries for 334 yards. He also is the top receiver with 17 catches for 164 yards.
