North Union’s Schiltz headed to state
HOLSTEIN — North Union freshman Nick Schiltz becomes the second runner in North Union history to qualify for the state cross country meet.
Schiltz, a junior, placed ninth in 18 minutes 39 seconds, at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet in Holstein on Thursday. He will travel to Fort Dodge for the Class 1A State Meet on Saturday, Oct. 31. The 1A boys race will start at 4 p.m.. at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course.
Schiltz is just the second North Union runner to qualify for state since the school formed.
“We are very excited Nick has worked very hard and I am proud of him to be able to accomplish this goal,” said North Union coach Brooke Nelsen. North wind and drizzle left for some interesting conditions and while they weren’t favorable the kids did the best they could on the day. The girls ran well. I think they might have gotten caught up in the beginning, but fought their way up.
Schiltz helped North Union to a fifth-place overall finish. Gage Madden placed 16th in 19:20, Gavyn Morphew placed 33rd in 20:23, Chase Cummins placed 39th in in 20:48, Nick Arndorfer placed 48th in 21:11, Trevor Kruse placed 56th in 21:33, and Dalton Tobin placed 76th in 23:04. Kruse is the lone senior for the varsity, as he ran his final race for the Warriors.
“The boys started out great,” said coach Nelsen. “Nick and Gage were in the top 15-18 by the time they came around to the 1 mile mark. Nick made his move in between mile 1 and mile 2, and held on to that nine spot the rest of the race. Gage came up short but still had a great race. The rest of the boys ran well and I look forward to next year.”
Meanwhile, the North Union girls placed eighth as a team.
“North wind and drizzle left for some interesting conditions and while they weren’t favorable the kids did the best they could on the day,” said coach Nelsen. “The girls ran well. I think they might have gotten caught up in the beginning, but fought their way up.”
Hanna Sandvig led the Warriors, placing 36th in 24:23 while Madi Hoyer placed 46th in 25:35, Hannah Morphew placed 52nd in 26:11, Cassie Beadle placed 53rd in 26:13 and Harley Tobin placed 54th in 26:20.
This year’s Warrior teams features four seniors–Shawn Odegaard, Jordyn Cummins, Gage Madden and Trevor Kruse.
“We graduate four seniors and this group is the first group of kids I have coached the longest,” said Nelsen. “I either had upperclassmen when I first started or lost kids due to football or volleyball – so to say this ‘I’m going to miss the group’ would be an understatement.
“Shawn came out as a junior not really knowing what cross country was about and he did well- improving as the seasons went on. Jordyn came out her sophomore year and fit automatically. She improved beautifully as the seasons went on – her leadership will be missed. Gage has improved so much the last three years, more than I think he even imagined. He is the definition of hard work paying off. Gage put in the miles over the summer and progressed how he should and while his season may not have ended the way he would have liked- he should not hang his head on how his cross country career ended. Trevor played football both his freshman and senior years. He handled the balance between the two great and was successful in both. He has grown as a runner and his success will take him far. We will miss them all, they each brought something different to the team and I wish them nothing but the best in the future.”
