The Estherville Lincoln Central boys had a chance to start the 2020-21 season 2-0, but came up a couple plays short in Tuesday’s 53-49 loss to Sioux Central.

After an Owen Larson 3-pointer cut ELC’s deficit to two, 51-49, with 13.5 seconds left in the game, the Midgets fouled Sioux Central’s Jacob Hargens. Hargens, who led his team with 17 points, gave ELC a chance when he missed two free throws.

ELC’s Adrian Vaughn then had a good look to tie the game, but his floater bounced off the back of the rim. The Rebels’ Carter Boettcher then sealed the win with a pair of free throws with 2.2 seconds left.

ELC had started very well with Owen Larson, Tristan Howard and Blake Ingvall all connecting from 3-point range while Will Larson drove inside for a layup or a foul for six of his points as ELC built a 17-10 lead.

However Sioux Central stormed back, as a couple ELC players went to the bench with two fouls. The Rebels tied the game at 23-23 with just under 2 minutes left in the half and then scored the final five points to lead 28-23.

Three-pointers by Vaughn and Owen Larson tied the game at 29-29 to start the second quarter, but Sioux Central scored the next five points to lead 35-31 entering the fourth.

ELC twice got within a point in the final 2 minutes, but couldn’t come up with the stop or basket needed.

Will Larson led ELC with 23 points while Owen Larson had 11, Vaughn had nine, and Howard and Ingvall each had three. Owen Larson had seven rebounds and three assists while Kegin Egeland had six rebounds and three steals.

The Rebels had a 17-point advantage at the free throw line where they were 21-of-35 while ELC was 4-of-7.

Monday’s game against Algona went better in the Midgets 53-45 victory.

While ELC trailed 13-10 after one quarter, a low-scoring second quarter saw the teams tied at 18-18 at halftime. The Midgets’ shots began falling in the third quarter as the doubled their point total to take a 36-29 lead entering the final frame. ELC extended its lead to double digits before Algona hit late shots for the final 53-45 margin.

Vaughn led ELC with 16 points and four steals while Owen Larson had 12 points. Will Larson had seven points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Matt Christensen chipped in six points, Egeland had five and Jack Jensen had four.

ELC (1-1 overall) is on the road against North Union in Armstrong on Monday. The Midgets go on the road to face Western Christian on Tuesday.
