Garrigan ends Titans’ season
ALGONA — The Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire boys did all they could to slow down Angelo Winkel and the Bishop Garrigan team.
The Titans trailed by just three points late in the third quarter though, when the Golden Bears began to pull away. Garrigan led 40-33 entering the fourth quarter and kept extending the lead for the 58-43 victory in Class 1A District action on Monday.
Winkel, a 6-9 senior and Top of Iowa West Conference Player of the Year, finished with 28 points on 13-of-22 shooting from the field along with 11 rebounds and three blocked shots.
GT/RA fell behind 11-5 after one quarter, but stepped up in the second period and trailed 26-21 at the break. However, the Titans couldn’t got the basket or stop to get closer than three points.
Drew Schnell led GT/RA with 17 points, Dalton Young had eight, Kory Hough had seven, Eric Heinrichs and Max Hough each had five and Andrew Kral had one.
GT/RA finishes an 8-14 season. However, the Titans should have more success next season as the entire starting lineup–four sophomores and one junior–will be back.
Garrigan (14-8) will host North Iowa (11-11) at 7 p.m., today. The Bison defeated Newman Catholic, 80-66, on Monday.
