ELC thinclads are back on the track

By Staff | Apr 1, 2021

SPENCER — After a one-year hiatus, the Estherville Lincoln Central track teams work back in action this past Monday at Spencer.

A year ago, the teams had practiced for about a month when the pandemic shut down all spring sports. Hence this was the first high school meet for both freshmen and sophomores.

Monday’s meet was a typical early bird meet with just four teams competing–ELC, Sheldon, Storm Lake and host Spencer. Team scores weren’t kept. While temperatures reached into the 70s, the athletes also face a stiff south wind.

On the girls’ side, ELC’s sprint medley and distance medley teams both took first. Both consisted of the same foursome of Jordyn Moore, Tatum Dunlavy, Jordyn Stokes, and Jasey Anderson.

ELC coach JR Nitchals had his first chance to view his team in action.

“I saw a lot of great things,” he said. “I thought our relays did really well with the short amount of time we had working on handoffs. Girls have been wearing mittens and gloves during outdoor practices because of the cold so we had few dropped batons prior to this early meet. The weather hasn’t been the greatest at practice. Girls are bundled up and wearing layers of clothes so it’s tough to see where we are as a varsity and JV team. The things we need to build on are coming out of starting blocks. We came out a little slow, but that is on me as a coach–we just need more repetition and confidence and I know we will improve.”

Jesse Nitchals, who had taken over head coaching duties last year, also coaches his first high school meet for ELC.

The Midgets had four top finishes with senior Nick Leonard in three of the wins. He won the 110-meter hurdles, the 400-meter hurdles and ran the first leg of the winning shuttle hurdle relay. The rest of that quartet included Ryan Leonard, Alex Pena and Ben Stevens.

ELC’s other top finish came from Parker Duitsman in the 3200-meter run. He also placed second in the 1600.

“I thought having an early bird meet was great,” said coach Jesse Nitchals. “It gave the team a chance to get back in the track and field meet mode. Great opportunity for the team to compete against familiar teams that we will see quite a bit throughout the season. I thought a lot of runners and throwers did a great job getting the rust off in competition. I also thought we were able to see how we match up against some of the local track and field teams. Now that we got the early bird track meet out of the way we can start working on a few details with relay exchanges and positioning runners and throwers in the best situation for the team to succeed in the future. This will be a great year for the ELC track and field team.”

Both ELC teams return to action Tuesday in a meet hosted by Okoboji High School in Milford.
