ORANGE CITY — After a perfect first week, Estherville Lincoln Central has struggled with a pair of losses in this second week of the 2021 season.

On Monday, the Midgets fell 7-4 to Newman Catholic. That was followed by a 9-7 seesaw battle against MOC-Floyd Valley on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s loss saw the Dutch jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but ELC took the lead, answering with five runs in the fourth. After a run in the sixth allowed the Midgets to lead 6-4, the Dutch came up with five runs in the bottom of the inning. ELC got just one run back in the seventh.

ELC’s defense struggled as four of MOC-Floyd Valley’s were unearned and ELC had three errors for the game. Ryan Schiltz pitched 5 1/3 innings, striking out six batters while giving up 10 hits and three walks. Landon Vaske closed out the sixth inning with no strikeouts without giving up a run, hit or a walk, but he did hit one batter.

On Monday, Newman Catholic jumped on top with three runs in the first inning. Both teams scored a run in the fourth and the Knights added three more in the sixth.

ELC attempted to rally in the seventh, but came up with just three runs.

ELC had just two hits on the game, as Ryan Schiltz was 1-2 and Seth Busch was 1-3. Blake Ingvall had two RBIs.

Will Larson took the loss. He gave up four runs, but just one earned, on two hits with nine strikeouts, five walks, and a hit-by-pitch. Owen Larson pitched the sixth inning, giving up three earned runs on two hits with two strikeouts, a walk, and two hit batters.
