Warriors keep winning
Meyer strikes out 13 in win over GT/RA
RUTHVEN — North Union kept its record perfect with a 9-3 non-conference win over Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire on Tuesday.
Warrior starter Emily Meyer struck out 13 Titans and now has 41 strikeouts for the season in her four victories.
Although North Union had baserunners each of the first two innings, the Warriors didn’t push a run across the plate until Olivia Von Bank singled, stole second and third bases and came home on a single to left by sister Vanessa Von Bank.
The Warriors loaded the bases in the fourth inning on a single by Libby Stevens follwoed by a walk to Ella Ulrich. Sam Nielsen laid a perfect bunt that rolled down the right side to load the bases. With one out, a single by Von Bank to center brought in one run, and a bloop to left field by Maggie Engelby brought in the second. Nielsen scored when Vanessa Von Bank reached on a fielder’s choice, as the Titans took the force out at third base.
One more Warrior run scored in the fifth inning, as Nielsen hit a two-out bunt single and scored from first on a double by Olivia Von Bank.
The Warriors added four runs in the sixth. Engelby drew a walk and Vanessa Von Bank singled. Meyer then helped her cause with a double deep to the left-center gap to bring both runs home. However, she was caught in a rundown trying to take third base on the throw home.
North Union kept on the pressure as Shelby Fraker drew a walk stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored as Ulrich reached on a two-out error. Ulrich then stole second and took third when Nielsen reached on a walk with a passed ball on ball four. A single by Olivia Von Bank brought Ulrich home to complete the scoring for the Warriors.
GT/RA took advantage of a leadoff error, as Lilly Thompson reached base. Thompson stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. A bunt single by Natalie Swedin brought Thompson home, with Swedin taking second on the throw. A single to right by Kenzie Hoffman scored another run, and Macy Alderson reached on the Warriors second error, a dropped fly ball in center. Ally Hanson then hit another ball to center with Hoffman scoring on a sacrifice fly.
Meyer wrapped up the rally with her 10th strikeout and then struck out the side in the seventh to complete the win. She gave up four hits and one walk.
The Warriors finished with 15 hits on the night, with Beadle and Vanessa Von Bank each going 3-5. Nielsen, Olivia Von Bank, and Meyer each had a pair of hits while Engelby, Stevens, and Ulrich each had one.
For the Titans, Swedin, Hoffman, Alderson, and Thompson each were 1-3.
Hailey Ebel pitched three innings in the loss, striking out two batters and walking three. Sophie Peterson pitched the final four innings and had five strikeouts and six walks.
North Union (4-0) was home against Belmond-Klemme (4-0) on Wednesday. The Warriors hosted Newell-Fonda (7-1) on Thursday and were on the road against Bishop Garrigan (2-3) on Friday.
GT/RA (2-2 overall) hosted South Central Calhoun (3-1) on Wednesday. The Titans are on the road against Pocahontas Area (0-5) on Friday.
