Betty Joyce Schichtl, daughter of Jens and Magaret (Bevan) Egeland, was born on June 28, 1936, in Roland, Iowa.

At a young age the family moved to Estherville, where she graduated from Estherville High School in 1953. She met and started dating Jerry Schichtl when she was just 16 years old. The couple was united in marriage on February 18, 1956, at the Estherville Lutheran Church. They made their home in Estherville, and she worked at the Iowa Trust from 1956-1959. She quit work to raise her family for about eight years, but went back to the bank, where she was head teller and assistant cashier for over 38 years.

Betty was a member of the Estherville Lutheran Church. She was very active in the church throughout the years, serving on the ministries committee, the Esther circle leader, Sunday school teacher, and pastoral support. Betty was a member of the Emmet County Relay for Life board, the Good Samaritan Advisory board, and the Kinship board. Betty and Jerry enjoyed taking many trips throughout the United States and Canada, as members of a motorcycle club and Coachman camping club. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Betty adored her family and was always there to support them, attending many cattle shows and sporting events; or enjoying a nice afternoon of card games.

Betty is survived by her husband of 68 years, Jerry; daughter Vicki (Mark) Garrelts; son Jeff (Sheila) Schichtl all of Estherville; three grandchildren Justin Garrelts, Spenser (Brittany) Schichtl, and Morgan (Andy) Umthun; six great-grandchildren, Jaxyn, Leah, Luke and Charlotte Schichtl and Emmett and Graham Umthun. She is also survived by her siblings Donald Egeland, David (Jeanne) Egeland, Mary Ellen Inbody, and Carolyn (Richard) Petersen.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, and siblings Jon Egeland, Richard Egeland, James Egeland, William Egeland, Phyllis Palmer, and Ruth Egeland.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Estherville Lutheran Church, Emmet County Relay for Life, or Good Samaritan Society.
