Betty Jean Clayton

Betty Jean Clayton was born on December 30, 1925, in Newton, Iowa to Leonard and Ella (Maron) Harness. She passed away on February 25, 2024, at Spring Creek Assisted Living in Armstrong, Iowa at the age of 98 years. 

Betty attended Newton Schools, graduating in 1943. She worked at Win-Power Mfg, Co at Newton until 1945 and she moved with the family to Dolliver, Ia. She worked at Iowa State College in Ames, Golden Sun Feeds in Estherville, First Interstate Bank of Estherville, retiring in 1991. She moved back to Dolliver to take care of her mother, brother, and sister. She moved to Spring Creek Assisted Living apartments in 2017. 

She was a member of the Dolliver Methodist Church, where she was active in the Ladies’ Aid in her younger years, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. 

Betty is survived by her close friend Marjorie Jones and her friends at Spring Creek Assisted Living.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents, her father Leonard Harness, mother Ella Hardecopf, step-father Albert Hardecopf, sister and brother-in-law Sallie (Robert) Nelson, brother and sister-in-law Richard “Dick” (Norma) Harness, four year old brother Lloyd Harness, and nephew Michael Wilcox. 

A graveside service at Lincoln Township Cemetery will be held at a future date.
