SPENCER — Estherville Lincoln Central juniors Kya Thiel and Abby Sander concluded the 2021 season with a third-place finish at the Class 1A Regional Individual Tournament on Friday.
Thiel and Sander started the day with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Merideth Lovell and Paris Mendez of Cherokee in the first round. In the second round, they defeated Madison Wilcoxon and Alivia Wolf of Sergeant-Bluff-Luton, 6-1, 6-4.
The third round paired them up against Sprit Lake-Okoobji’s Sidney Stanley and Lauren Ellis, and the ELC pair lost 6-4, 6-2.
That sent up in the third-place match, where Thiel and Sander concluded the day with an 8-6 win over Spirit Lake-Okoboji’s other doubles team of Taylor Schneider and Sophie Behrens.
In other doubles play, ELC’s Grace Johnson and Brenna Evans opened with a 6-1, 6-1 first-round win over Peyton Preuls and Makayla Brody of Sergeant Bluff-Luton. However, Johnson and Evans then lost 6-2, 6-2 to LeMars’ Caroline Meis and Madison Claussen.
In first-round singles play, ELC’s Lili Snyder lost 6-0, 6-1 to Cherokee’s Sarah Messler. Grace Ruschy lost 6-1, 6-1 to Cherokee’s Kenna Mongan.
Teams competing in the regionals were ELC, Cherokee, LeMars, Sergeant Bluff-Luton, Spencer, Spirit Lake, Storm Lake and St Edmond’s of Fort Dodge.
