Daryld “Kernal” Keith Frederick, the son of Lester and Vera (Dammann) Frederick, was born on February 22, 1940 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He died Saturday, January 23, 2021 in Burnsville, Minnesota at the age of 80 years.

Daryld grew up in the Emmetsburg and Cylinder areas riding stick horses and playing in the corncribs and became known as Kernal from then on. Kernal graduated from the Superior Schools in 1958 where he was a member of the last graduating class. He enjoyed driving his little red truck around Estherville where he met Esther Larsen and fell in love. The couple got married on August 11, 1962 in Willard, Missouri “on the hottest day of the year”. They made their home in Estherville and began their family shortly thereafter. Kernal worked in the excavating business for a few years and then landed a job at the Superior Co-op Elevator. Kernal and Esther decided to move the family to Superior where Kernal volunteered with the Superior Fire Department and plowed the streets for many winters. They retired from the Elevator in 2002 and spent their time traveling, cruising and going on casino gambling trips with family and friends.

After Esther’s passing, Kernal enjoyed spending time at Big Spirit Lake, the Colorado Rocky Mountains, and outside with his children and grandchildren. He was well known for his garden, and he enjoyed sharing his produce and gardening secrets with the many people who often stopped by to visit or share a cold one. A day fishing at Swan Lake brought him great relaxation and he could often be found in his big garage, tinkering or building something.

Left to cherish Daryld’s memory are his three daughters, Brenda (Lary) Lyon of Burnsville, Minnesota; Connie (Darryl) Sanborn of Fraser, Colorado; Lori (Shawn) Haines of Indianapolis, Indiana; two granddaughters Kallie and Katie Lyon; four step-grandsons; and five step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Darwin (Becky) Frederick of Spirit Lake, Iowa and Deanna Boelman of Prescott, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lester and Vera (Dammann) Frederick, wife Esther, brother Duane Frederick and sister Dolores Kilgore.
