David Larson, 82, of Afton, died Thursday, February 1, 2024, at Greater Regional Health in Creston. Celebration of Life Memorial Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, February 10, 2024, at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Pastor Mary O’Riley will officiate. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Estherville, Ia. Open visitation, with family receiving friends will be 2-4 p.m. Saturday, prior to services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the Wounded Warriors or to the charity of their choice. A second Celebration of Life gathering will be from 2 to 4 p.m. February 17, 2024, at the Henry-Olson Funeral Chapl in Estherville, Iowa. Online condolences may be made at www.powersfh.com.
David Lee Larson was born on the Larson family farm in Estherville, Ia., on July 10, 1941, to Levi Severine Larson and Cecile Mae Iseminger. He graduated from Estherville High School in 1960, then attended Junior College for one year and Bailey Technical Institute in St. Louis one year.
He worked for Missouri Valley Machinery in Sioux City from 1962-1963 and for Gibbs-Cook Equipment Co. in Des Moines from 1965-1976. David entered the U.S. Army in 1963 and served as a Medical Corpsman in Rucker, AL., until 1965. He had the honor of enjoying the Vietnam Era Honor Flight in September 2018 to Washington, DC.
David was united in marriage to Katie Marriott on October 11, 1969, in Estherville, Ia. He owned his own business, CAT Service, from 1976-2019 in the Creston and Afton area, known by many of his customers as “CAT Man”.
In David’s early years David enjoyed hunting. He really enjoyed his yearly fishing trips to Canada with his nephew Gary and special friends Greg, Craig and Bob. He also enjoyed restoring old Farmall tractors and went on several of the KSIB sponsored tractor rides. He thoroughly enjoyed his visits with friends when they dropped in, but especially the family gatherings. Many of his customers would contact him for advice on how to fix a machine after David retired. By the same token, many of his customers became dear friends. He was so looking forward to Spring to plant his garden and getting to do yard work.
Survivors include his wife Katie Larson of Afton; his sisters Ardis Pilquist and Barbara (George) Johnson, both of Estherville. David and Katie never had children but had numerous beloved nieces and nephews, and many other extended beloved family members.
David was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Maurice (Perl) Larson and two sisters, Arlene (Leonard) Zitterich and Lois (Omer) Quastad, and a brother-in-law, Kenny Pilquist.
