Jim was born on March 7, 1949, in Lakefield, Minnesota, to Ernest and Geneva (Mosley) Malchow. He was raised in Lakefield and graduated from Lakefield High School. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota Morris, earning his bachelor’s degree before returning to Lakefield.

While working at a local retail store, Jim spent many weekends cruising “the loop” in Lakefield, where he met the love of his life, Debora Rients. The couple was united in marriage on February 4, 1978, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lakefield. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and hard work.

Jim began his career as a delivery driver with Pepsi in Estherville, a position he held for more than 20 years. Following his time with Pepsi, he continued his career with Frito-Lay, where he worked until his retirement on March 4, 2017. Known for his friendly demeanor, kind smile, and willingness to help others, Jim left a lasting impression on the many customers and coworkers he encountered throughout the years.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville, Jim found great satisfaction in caring for his yard and took particular pride in maintaining his hedge. He enjoyed gardening throughout his life, often tending large gardens with dedication and care. An avid reader and talented woodworker, Jim also loved spending time outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and bow hunting, appreciating the peace, patience, and connection to nature that both provided. Whether working in his garden, crafting projects in his workshop, or spending time outdoors, Jim was never afraid of hard work and found joy in life’s simple pleasures.

Though a man of few words, Jim was known for his warm smile, welcoming nature, and quiet kindness. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, gentle spirit, and unwavering love for his family.
