Lakers split league games


CEDAR RAPIDS - The Iowa Lakes women couldn't keep up with top-ranked Kirkwood in the teams' first meeting of the season on Saturday.

The Lakers trailed by just two, 16-14, after one quarter, but the Eagles dominated the next three quarters, leading 49-24 at half-time, and 69-34, after three quarters on the way to a 77-42 victory.

Breanna Wendland led the Lakers with eight points, Safiyer Coleman had seven points and seven rebounds, Bethany Rehse and Tyler Pacheco each had six points, and Shareece Smith and Destiny Broussard each had five points.

Iowa Lakes (9-4 overall, 1-1 in the ICCAC) is on the road at Marshalltown on Wednesday.

Last Wednesday, Iowa Lakes women dominated Iowa Central, 76-34, in the conference opener.

The Lakers jumped out to a 14-3 lead after one quarter, 37-13, at halftime and 60-26 after three quarters.

"Great team effort tonight. I am very proud of this group," said Iowa Lakes coach Ashley Martin. "This is a great start to conference play. I thought our kids played really hard tonight and were focused. Did a lot of good things defensively and we moved the ball on the offensive end."

Shareece Smith and Tyler Pacheco each scored 13 points to lead the Lakers while Brianna O'Donnell added 12 points.
