In 1943, a child was born to Earl and Alice (Myers) Burke. The child was given a name as Linda Jean and was the second child of Earl and Alice. Linda attended elementary and high school in Stromsburg, NE. She enjoyed music and playing the piano, accordion and drums. She was privileged to play at the National Youth Conference in Texas and in the Honor Band. She grew up on the family farm just outside of Stromsburg.
On June 17, 1962, Linda was married to Gary Burmood, from Columbus, NE. They enjoyed a honeymoon trip to the World’s Fair in Seattle, WA and made their way to Santa Monica, CA, living there for about a year. She had fond memories of fishing and even catching an octopus while she was there.
They traveled back to Columbus, NE, where Linda enjoyed bowling amongst a number of other activities and always enjoyed hanging out with family and friends. They were blessed with two children, Jodi and Ron. They briefly moved to Worthington, MN and then to Sioux Falls, SD. Linda enjoyed doing daycare, selling Avon and being involved in the PTA. She was always known as a kind, hard-working, loving and giving person.
The family moved to Estherville, IA in the early 1980’s where Linda started a career with John Morrells. She enjoyed the lakes and celebrating anniversaries at Arnolds Park next to West Lake Okoboji. She enjoyed singing in the church choir and being involved with women’s circle. She graduated with an Associates of Arts Degree at Iowa Lakes Community College. Once the plant closed in Estherville, she transferred back to Sioux Falls, SD. She graduated with a Bachelors in Social Work from Augustana College while continuing to work at John Morrells. She was involved with the Sioux Falls Jaycees and other fundraising organizations. She enjoyed traveling and watching movies on the big screen. She enjoyed deep sea fishing in the Bahamas. She eventually retired from John Morrells with nearly 29 years of service.
Unfortunately, she developed Parkinson’s disease at her retirement, and she began a courageous 16-year battle. Her positive attitude and religious following kept her going. She was extremely determined, and she could be seen traveling the sidewalks and other areas on her scooter. She was always playing the piano with many of her original tunes. She enjoyed shopping, going to rodeos and dancing. She still liked to fish when the opportunity arose. She enjoyed ice cream, pizza, watermelon, tacos, chocolates, divinity, fudge and Diet Dr. Pepper. She was blessed with two grandchildren, Zach Burmood and Emilee Wolf. She enjoyed seeing them as often as possible. She was married for 59 years until Gary’s passing in 2022.
She enjoyed her time the past 4 years at Avera Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls, SD. Linda passed away unexpectedly in her room on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. She loved to socialize with the other residents. She greatly appreciated all the staff and their assistance throughout her time there.
Left to cherish her memory is her brother, Ron (Kate) Burke of Visalia, CA, sister-in-law, Judy (Tom) Lukassen of Pleasant Prairie, WI, son, Ron (Jill) Burmood of Harrisburg, SD, son-in-law, Phil Wolf of New River, AZ, grandson, Zach Burmood of Harrisburg, SD, granddaughter, Emilee Wolf of New River, AZ, six nieces and nephews, cousins and other beloved relatives and friends.
