Midgets tie for 12th at Emmetsburg Tourney


EMMETSBURG - Brigham Vermeys led Estherville Lincoln Central with a second-place finish at the Bob Roethler Invitational in Emmetsburg on Saturday.

ELC tied for 12th overall in the 14-team tournament with 69 points

Vermeys won 5-0 over Denver's Josh Terrill in the quarterfinal and then pinned Forest City's Austin Kirschbaum in the semifinal to reach the final. However Emmetsburg's Sean Brennan was too much, as the E'Hawk won by fall in 2:50 over Vermeys.

Vermeys was one of eight ELC wrestlers competing in the tournament.

Zavion McMurran placed third for the second weekend tournament in row. He began the day pinning Okoboji's Cody Wintz in 1:23 and then pinned Forest City's Drake Freeman in 1:38 to reach the semifinal. There, he lost by fall in 5:19 to Central Lyon-George-Little Rock's Dylan Winkel. McMurran came back with a 6-1 decision over Emmetsburg's Jon Lace II and then won 3-1 over Algona's Cole Lewis in the third-place match.

Garrett Paulson (160) placed sixth at 180 pounds and went 1-3 on the day with a 2-1 decision over Algona's Luke McKenna in the consolation round.

Zack Anderson (138) placed seventh with a pair of pins in the consolation round, defeating Eagle Grove's Andrew Dencklau in 21 seconds and Okoboji's Jesse Bockman in 2:42 in the seventh-place match.

Michael Houge went 1-3 on the day and placed eighth.

Quintin Marquez (120), Raul Diaz (152), and Dawson Shasteen (182) also wrestled in the tournament, but did not place.

ELC is back in action Thursday at Sibley-Ocheyedan. The Midgets travel to the Spencer Tournament on Saturday.
