No. 11 Lakers pick up key wins


The Iowa Lakes men kept pace with the ICCAC leaders with wins over DMACC and Ellsworth last week.

The Lakers, ranked 11th, handed third-ranked DMACC its first conference loss on Wednesday with a 69-59 victory. The Laker defense held the Bears to 36 percent shooting from the floor.

Iowa Lakes jumped out to an early lead against DMACC and led 39-25 at halftime. The Bears battled back in the second half, getting to within five, 60-55, late in the game. However, a mini-Laker run staved off the visitors.

Justin Brookens led Iowa Lakes with 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Kevin Cook had 14 points while shooting 7-of-11 from the field, along with eight rebounds. Keshawn Pegues had nine points and nine rebounds, Malcolm Clayton had seven points, six rebounds and five assists, Dillon Carlson had nine points, Alan Kikwaki had seven, Boston Grimes had five and Xavier Evans had two.

On Saturday, Iowa Lakes led 40-33 at half-time and won the second half by 10 points, 47-37, for an 87-70 victory.

Iowa Lakes shot nearly 51 percent (37-of-73) from the floor including 44 percent (11-of-25) from 3-point range.

Brookens led Iowa Lakes with 25 points, Clayton and Grimes each had 17, and Carlson had 13. Cook chipped in six points, Kikwaki had four, Pegus had three and Evans had two.

Cook had eight rebounds and Pegues had seven. Grimes had four steals and three assists.

Iowa Lakes (16-3 overall, 5-1 in the ICCAC) hosted Dakota Wesleyan JV on Sunday. The Lakers are on the road against Little Priest Tribal College on Wednesday.
