A graveside service for Steve Billings, 54, formerly of Estherville, will be held at 12 p.m., Saturday, June 20, 2020, at East Side Cemetery in Estherville with Pastor Doug Burton officiating. Military rites will be provided by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91, both of Estherville.
Steve Billings was born in Estherville June 21, 1965, son of Donald Duane and Patty Billings. He passed from this place on Dec. 16, 2019, at VA Hospital Portland, Ore.
Steve grew up in Estherville and graduated Estherville High School. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian Church (Disciples) in Estherville.
Steve was one of Virgil Hempstead's many Boy Scouts. Virgil's troop would always hike past our house on N26 on their way to a weekend camp out up north of us. From the time Steve was about five years old until he was finally old enough to join the troop, when he saw Virgil and the boys going by, he would beg to go with them.
While in high school, Steve worked for his dad, Billings Excavating. After graduating he enlisted in the US Navy. While on delayed entry waiting for a USN Electronics school, he worked for Tom Eaton, Fagre Construction and John Morrell.
Steve's Navy career took him from boot camp in San Diego, CA to the Philippines to the Persian Gulf to Australia and Norfolk, VA where he was discharged as a 2nd Class Petty Officer.
San Diego and Southern California remained his home after his Honorable Discharge from the Navy. He had a 20-plus year career as an Electronic Tech designing, teaching, and troubleshooting systems for civilian defense contractors.
Steve loved sailing, boating, scuba diving, fishing, camping, and shooting pool, listening to the Eagles and going for a ride in the rain. He also shared his dad's keen interest in WWII history and studying the constellations with his dad in Harvey Lundy's class.
Steve loved to tease. He loved his family and his dog, Ginger. We miss him so much!
Steve was survived by his dad, Donald Duane, for 34 days. Also surviving Steve are his mom, Patty Billings, his sisters Velvet Ross (Brian) and January McCray (Eddie), nephews Jacob Lundgren (Alli), Joshua Lundgren, Justin Lundgren, David McCray, nieces Rachel McCray, RemiJo Lundgren, Laney Lu Lundgren, aunt Juanita Mahin, uncle Dean Ricker, many cousins and friends.
Preceding him in death are his paternal grandparents, Don and Peggy Billings, niece Faith McCray, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
