Funeral services for Thomas James Umscheid, 54, of rural Armstrong, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 16, 2020, at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Armstrong with Pastor Lauri Boysen officiating. Interment will be at High Lake Cemetery, Wallingford. He died suddenly on July 11, 2020, at his home in rural Armstrong after battling stage IV colon cancer for over 12 years.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, July 15 at the church in Armstrong.

Thomas James Umscheid, son of Richard and Dolores (Schacherer) Umscheid was born May 4, 1966 in Estherville.

Tom grew up in the Wallingford area, graduating from Lincoln Central High School. He then attended Waldorf College on a football scholarship.

On June 20, 1987, Tom was united in marriage to Dawn Moore at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Armstrong. The couple moved to rural Armstrong where they raised their two children, which they were blessed to adopt from South Korea. Tom worked at GKN and Wild Rose Casino until his cancer diagnosis in November of 2007.

Tom enjoyed being a baseball and softball umpire; hunting, especially deer; attending all of his children's activities; Wednesday poker nights; playing 500 and other games, always knowing which cards his opponents were holding; and hosting five foreign exchange students.

Tom was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church where he served as an usher.

Tom is survived by his wife, Dawn; his children, Dyson and Dayna; siblings, Cathy (Ron) Beaver, Connie (Dennis) Mart, Chuck (Peggy) Umscheid, John (Theresa) Umscheid, Kelly (Jim) Petersen; in-laws, Duane (Sandra) Moore; brothers-in-law, Dan (Denette) Moore, Doran (Angie) Moore; special cousin-in-law, Tracie (Brian) Schnell; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He is also survived by his foreign exchange sons, Chang Min, Chris Christensen, Christian Esselin, Jonas Hoffmann, and Jarno Senger.

Tom has been preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Dolores and his nephew, Nathan Mart.
