Susan Kay (Cook) Vick passed away at the T. Boone Pickens Hospice Care Center in Dallas, Texas, on July 11, 2022, of a fall of chronic pulmonary complications.

She is survived by her loving husband, Larry Vick of Garland, Texas (formerly of Spirit Lake, Iowa), children Robin Vick Dau (Jayson) of Spencer, Iowa, and Michael Vick and Kelli of Marathon, Iowa; sisters Nancy Cook Gorman of Beaverton, Ore., Mary Cook Rolfson and husband, Rolly of Graettinger, and Janice Cook Helmke and husband, Al, of Ruthven, and brother William Cook of Menahga, Minn. She is also survived by grandchildren, Tyler Vick, Alycia Vick, and Jackson Dau, and since her passing, the birth of a great-grandson Kolcen (born March 2023).

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Eloa and Leslie Cook of Estherville and her in-laws, Edna and Layton C. Vick of Spirit Lake.

Sue was born in Spencer, Iowa, on Dec. 22, 1945. She was raised and educated in Ruthven, Gruver and Estherville school systems where she loved reading history and getting involved in the debate team.

She had a wonderful brain and could memorize speeches and history facts. She was active in many school activities and being around people. She loved playing cards with family and keeping a garden. She loved to knit and crochet and keeping up with family histories. She also collected and used (many) cookbooks and recipes over the years. Susan bought the Dairy Sweet in Spirit Lake and later worked at the Grille in Spirit Lake. She moved to Garland, Texas, for Larry’s work. She went to work for Crystal Tips Booth and then later Home Depot. She loved gardening and plants, having a green thumb. Texas was a hotter climate.

Sue finally retired from Home Depot and enjoyed the two dogs (Pip and Squeak) for company.

She will be remembered at a gathering at a grave-site service at the Lakeview Cemetery, Spirit Lake, on Wednesday, June 7, at 10:30 a.m.

The family invites you to join them for lunch at the Spirit Lake United Methodist Church in Remembrance of Susan at 1812 Gary Ave., Spirit Lake, following the service.
