What’s Going on at Emmet County Extension and Outreach?

Posted

Summer is a great time to get outdoors and enjoy Iowa’s landscapes! Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Emmet and Palo Alto county will be teaming up to host the Iowa Master Conservationist Program beginning on July 8. The program will take place at featured conservation locations in Emmet and Palo Alto counties, providing participants with hands-on interaction with the diversity of the state’s natural resources. The program teaches about Iowa’s natural ecosystems and the diversity of conservation challenges and opportunities that exist in the region. Graduates of the course learn to make informed choices for leading and educating others to improve conservation in Iowa.

The program consists of approximately 12 hours of online curriculum and six face-to-face meetings. The online modules will include lessons and resources by Iowa State subject-matter experts to be reviewed at the participants’ own pace at home. Module topics include conservation history and science, understanding Iowa ecosystems, implementing conservation practices in human dominated landscapes and developing skills to help educate others about conservation practices.

For the in-person sessions, GPS meeting locations will be communicated prior to each session, based on the weather forecast. The six face-to-face meetings will build on the online lessons and will be held:

n Thursdays: July 8th & July 15th (6-8pm)

n Saturdays: July 17th & July 31st (9-11am)

n Thursdays: August 5th & August 12th (6-8pm)

Each face-to-face meeting will be led by local experts to demonstrate how the principles covered in the online curriculum play out locally. We couldn’t do this without our local partners which include the Emmet County Conservation Board and Nature Center; the Palo Alto County Conservation Board and the Lost Island Nature Center; and the Palo Alto/Emmet NRCS conservationist. Heavy snacks will be provided, and participants are encouraged to dress weather-appropriate with shoes fit for walking on uneven surfaces.

Registration for the course is $30 and is due at the time of registration. To register contact the ISU Extension and Outreach office in Emmet County at 712-362-3434. We hope you join us!
